When I Was

Talk about your life.

Another language comes with it.

Have real voice conversations about your memories, experiences and everyday life. When I Was turns what matters to you into words and phrases in the language you want to learn.

New or coming back, it is the same box. We send a link that signs you in — there is no password to make up or remember.

Been here before? Use the same email address. A new link does not make a second account — your memories, what you have learned and your subscription are exactly where you left them.

How it works

  1. Talk

Tell When I Was about something from your life — a memory, an experience, a person, a place, a plan, or just how the day went.

  2. Learn

Words and phrases from your own conversation become the material you learn from, in the language you chose.

  3. Remember

It brings the useful ones back later, and asks you to recall them or use them yourself.

  4. Keep talking

Your conversations, your memories and your language build on each other. What you said last week is still there this week.

You talk. It talks back.

This is a spoken conversation, not a chat window. You say things out loud and hear an answer, the way you would talk to somebody sitting across from you. There is nothing to type.

It works on a laptop or phone speaker. Headphones help if the room is noisy, or if you would rather the conversation stayed yours.

What that actually looks like

You say

“When I was little, I put two beetles in a matchbox and told my mother they were boxing.”

It might introduce

el escarabajo — beetle

Said inside your story rather than defined beside it. Days later it comes back — and that time you are the one who has to find the word.

An illustration, not a promise about this particular word. What it picks up comes from what you actually said, and from the language you are learning. The point is that your own life is the material.

About

When I Was starts with a conversation rather than a lesson. There is no course to begin, no unit one, and nothing to complete before you are allowed to say something.

People remember what mattered to them. A place, somebody they knew, a funny thing that went wrong, a plan for next week — these stay in the mind because they already mean something. Most language learning ignores all of it and hands everyone the same list of words in the same order, belonging to nobody.

So this works the other way round. You talk about your own life, and the other language is built around the material you brought — introduced where it belongs in your own story, and brought back later when it is worth remembering.

It is also perfectly fine to just talk. Not every conversation has to teach you something, and a day when you only wanted to tell somebody about your day is not a day you failed at anything.
